Television and Radio: Licensing decisions, regulation, and global trends
The world of television and radio broadcasting was full of important news last week, from licensing decisions to strategic documents influencing the future of digital radio. The international organization WorldDAB issued a strategic manual for regulators to accelerate the transition to digital DAB+ radio. This document summarizes best practices from over 30 countries and emphasizes the strategic importance of DAB+ for crisis communication and national sovereignty. Licensing was also addressed in our country: Regional station Praha TV and film channel Joj Cinema obtained a 12-year license, with Praha TV focusing on FullHD broadcasting. On the other hand, channels Barrandov Krimi and Barrandov Kino are at risk of license revocation due to the announced bankruptcy of the operator, which was subsequently confirmed by the court that terminated their operation. Good news comes for education – EDU Radio obtained a nationwide license and will cover the entire Czech Republic. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) appeals to the EU for the Digital Networks Act to protect radio in cars and network neutrality, which is crucial for preserving radio as a crisis communication tool. In Britain, their dominance is undeniable: BBC Radio dominated the British market even at the beginning of 2026, with digital platforms reporting records. Czech Television then scores in Europe, where the film Máma won the Prix CIRCOM Regional award. In connection with the true crime show case, TV Nova is establishing an Ethical Panel that will oversee production to be more sensitive to victims. An important change in the domestic media landscape is also that the Czech Radio Council is complete: MPs elected Žantovský, the Senate Adamčíková.
Media and Publishing: Acquisitions and conflicts of interest
Last week, the Czech media market was shaken by the news of billionaire Pavel Tykač's entry into Mafra. His company Tymeprax is taking over a half stake in the publishing house, which fundamentally changes the balance of power in one of the largest media houses in the Czech Republic. An out-of-court settlement is not yet in sight in the case of moderator Václav Moravec. Czech Television is demanding a fine from Václav Moravec due to his new project, as the clause is in effect. On the international scene, it is interesting news that James Murdoch is buying Vox and New York Magazine, which leads to the division of the Vox Media group into two parts.
Digital: AI dominates, connectivity improves
The digital sector was in the spotlight last week, mainly due to the development of artificial intelligence and strengthening connectivity. The Czech Telecommunication Office (ČTÚ) opened the way to gigabit internet over the air by releasing the 26 GHz band, which will enable the massive expansion of wireless connectivity. A revolution in the Internet of Things (IoT) is brought about by the interconnection of mobile networks and satellites, which will ensure global coverage even in the most remote locations. The Czech Telecommunication Office is also looking for a web and graphic designer to communicate complex topics more understandably. The role of artificial intelligence is getting stronger: Google is launching the Omni model, a new AI that generates realistic videos and handles advanced deepfakes. The Czech Republic is actively involved in the discussion on AI regulation, Czech IT leaders negotiated with the Vice-President of the EC on AI legislation and digital sovereignty. It also affects infrastructure: Czech Radiocommunications is transforming data centers for the AI era, preparing liquid cooling and 800V distribution. The negative trend is artificial viewership on the rise – viewbotting is changing the economics of streaming and making it harder for platforms to identify fake viewers. Energy savings are a priority: CETIN is limiting the performance of unused networks in the O2 arena, with the goal of energy savings. In software personalization, a new development is that Google and Apple want you to "prompt" your own apps, which opens the way to so-called "vibe coding". And on financial markets, OpenAI's IPO is expected; the highly anticipated IPO could happen as early as September. Vodafone stores are transforming into advice centers for seniors, helping with mobile phones even without a contract, which is significant support for digital inclusion for the older generation.
PR and Communication: AI changes rules, authenticity is key
The field of PR and communication is undergoing fundamental changes, primarily under the influence of artificial intelligence. The first impression of a brand is already being written by AI, which means that communication strategies must now emphasize education and providing data for algorithms. Traditional PR methods based on repeating slogans are no longer effective. LinkedIn advises creators that the success of videos depends on authenticity and correct timing, indicating a shift towards as much real content as possible. The role of PR is also transforming from merely securing media outputs to strategic consulting, as shown in the article "PR as a Business Engine", where experts recommend a broader view of client communication.
People and Personnel: New faces in telecommunications
In the personnel area, an important shift in the leadership of a telecommunications company was recorded. T-Mobile is changing the leadership of its B2B division; Michal Müller is joining from a competitor. He will take over the management of the division for corporate clients and public administration from August and will focus on developing business relationships.
