Tech giant Match Group, which owns platforms such as Tinder, Hinge, and OkCupid, has announced a significant investment in the specialized dating segment. The company has invested $100 million in the Sniffies app, which focuses on the gay community and serves as a direct competitor to the established Grindr. This acquisition of a minority stake comes as Match Group seeks to diversify its portfolio and respond to stagnant growth in its core brands.
The Sniffies app, based in Seattle, differs from traditional dating apps with its focus on "cruising" and quick hookups. The platform uses a fully interactive real-time map that shows users active people nearby and popular spots for in-person meetings. According to Match Group, the app currently has approximately 3 million active monthly users.
From the first meeting with the Sniffies team a year ago, it was clear that they deeply understand their users and have a strong vision for how their community truly connects, said Spencer Rascoff, CEO of Match Group, in a press statement.
Although Match Group has made an equity investment in the company, Sniffies is expected to continue operating as an independent unit, with the parent company assisting in further strategic growth and fulfilling the founding team's vision.
The investment comes at a strategically important moment. Match Group has been facing the phenomenon of "dating app fatigue" in recent years. Although the company exceeded earnings estimates in the last quarter, its flagship Tinder saw a decline in user growth. Analysts attribute this trend to users' growing desire for more spontaneous forms of dating, which the location-based concept of Sniffies addresses.
This move confirms Match Group's long-term strategy to dominate specific demographic niches in the market where users show higher engagement than with broadly focused applications. Supporting Sniffies could provide Match Group with a key advantage in the fight for the LGBTQ+ user segment, which has so far been dominated by standalone platforms.
