Streaming platform Spotify has officially launched a new feature called Articles, which brings spoken versions of long magazine texts to the app. Users currently have access to over 650 articles in English from ten leading global publishers, including titles such as Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, WIRED, and Vanity Fair. The project focuses on in-depth journalism, which can be listened to in the app in the same way as audiobooks.

The service is initially available in markets where Spotify already offers the sale and listening of audiobooks. The pricing model is divided according to the user's account type. Premium subscribers have article listening counted towards their monthly 15-hour limit available for audiobooks. Non-subscribers can purchase individual texts for a single price of $1.99 per article. The content within the Articles section was prepared by the internal Spotify Audiobooks team, and the length of individual recordings does not exceed two hours.

From a technological perspective, Spotify relies on a combination of human input and modern technologies. Some of the texts were narrated by professional voice actors, while artificial voice was used for the rest. The company declared transparency in this regard – all passages generated by artificial intelligence are clearly marked in the application so that listeners can distinguish the origin of the audio.

According to Colleen Prendergast, who leads the licensing division at Spotify Audiobooks, the goal is to naturally expand the offering of spoken word content with topics that interest users.

“With Articles, we are introducing long-form journalism in audio as a natural extension of the music, podcasts, and audiobooks people come to Spotify for,”

said Prendergast. For publishers, this move represents a new distribution channel to reach an audience. Rolling Stone CEO Julian Holguin added that the collaboration allows them to deepen their relationship with readers and offers space for discovering new stories.

The strategic expansion into spoken articles follows a successful year in the audiobook segment, where Spotify saw a 60% increase in listened hours across 22 markets. Although the current offering is limited to English-speaking regions, it indicates the future direction of streaming services towards integrating previously purely textual editorial formats into the audio ecosystem.
