Greek public broadcaster ERT continues to modernize its broadcasting infrastructure. Following Athens and Thessaloniki, the Thessaly region has also received digital radio broadcasting. The signal is being broadcast from a newly installed digital transmission center on Mount Pelion, covering key areas of central Greece.
Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB+) technology represents a significant shift in sound distribution quality. Compared to traditional analog FM broadcasting, it offers listeners significantly clearer sound without ambient noise and interference. The installation of a digital transmitter on Pelion aims to eliminate previous reception issues that listeners in the rugged terrain of Thessaly previously faced.
The new network allows listeners with compatible receivers in cars or homes to automatically tune into the entire fleet of nationwide ERT stations. The digital package includes a wide range of genres from popular music to classical. Available stations include, for example, Kosmos, Zeppelin, or Tρίτο Πρόγραμμα (Third Program).
Digital broadcasting in the DAB+ system currently includes all main national circuits of public radio. The only exception is regional stations, which continue to broadcast on local FM frequencies in specific areas. The transition to a digital standard is part of a broader strategy for the digitization of the Greek media space, which aims to ensure reception stability and more efficient use of the radio spectrum.
“DAB technology offers much clearer sound without parasitic noise compared to classic analog FM broadcasting,” states the technical report on the start of operations.
