České Radiokomunikace (CRA) and Czech Radio are commencing cooperation on a project that could fundamentally change the way the public is informed in crisis situations. Both institutions have signed a memorandum on testing a new early warning system via digital DAB+ radio broadcasting. The technology, known by the abbreviations EWS (Emergency Warning System) and ASA (Announcement for Public Safety), is designed to ensure the delivery of critical information even when conventional communication channels fail.
The main advantage of the system lies in its technological independence. Unlike warning applications on smartphones or informational SMS messages, which depend on the load and functionality of mobile networks, DAB+ operates within standard radio broadcasting. The signal is thus broadcast even in areas with zero mobile coverage or in situations where networks are overloaded due to an ongoing crisis event, such as floods or extensive power outages.
A key function of the system under test is its ability to automatically activate end devices. Compatible receivers can, in the event of an alarm, immediately wake up from standby mode and broadcast an emergency alert, even if they are switched off at that moment. This feature is considered crucial, especially during night hours or in situations where people are not actively monitoring media or social networks.
According to representatives of the involved parties, this is not just a technical innovation, but a strategic step for national security. The robust digital radio infrastructure offers high reliability and speed of message delivery to a broad audience at once, without the risk of delays that occur when distributing data over the internet. The system could in the future form a key pillar of state crisis communication and complement the existing siren network.
The currently launched testing phase is planned for the next 12 months. During this period, experts from CRA and Czech Radio will verify the stability of the system, signal range under different conditions, and the response of end devices. Based on the results of the trial operation, a decision will then be made on possible widespread deployment and further development of the technology within the Czech Republic.
