British public broadcaster BBC has achieved historic success in the viewership of its international content. According to current data, the weekly audience for BBC News, BBC World Service, and BBC Studios productions reached a record 502 million people. This is the highest figure since current audience measurement methods began to be used.
Year-on-year, total reach increased by 11 percent, with the news section contributing the most to this result. The BBC News division alone attracted 467 million viewers and listeners weekly, an increase of 50 million compared to the previous monitored period. BBC World Service remains a key pillar, accounting for over 70% of the corporation's overall international reach.
Digital Transformation and Global Markets
The company's management attributes the main driver of growth to the strategic shift to the online space. As a result, the BBC World Service's digital audience has grown by more than 40 percent. Services that have seen the most significant strengthening of positions include the Ukrainian, Brazilian, and Spanish-speaking sections (BBC News Mundo).
“We’ve seen growth from all corners of the world, as people seek out our journalism in record numbers for its breadth and depth. We’ve maintained our position as the most trusted news provider in the UK and globally,” said Jonathan Munro, interim CEO of BBC News.
In terms of geographical distribution, India remains the most important foreign market for the British broadcaster. In this country, an average of 74 million people watch BBC content weekly. Other key regions with high reach include:
- United States of America
- Nigeria
- Iran
- Tanzania
Fiona Crack, interim Global Director of BBC News, added that thanks to digital transformation, millions more people now benefit from the “penetrating and impactful journalism” prepared by the broadcaster's teams. The record results confirm the global trend of increasing interest in verified news in the digital environment.
