The current digital advertising market is undergoing a fundamental transformation. While in the past decade, user attention, measured by the number of clicks, was the main metric of success, current trends in commerce media indicate a shift towards trust as the most important factor for growth. This development responds to market oversaturation with advertising messages and growing consumer skepticism towards irrelevant content.
Commercial media, i.e., advertising networks operated directly by retailers, benefit from their unique position. They have first-party data on shopping behavior, which allows them to deliver advertising at the moment when the user is in shopping mode. According to an analysis by Marketing Dive, consumers are willing to tolerate advertising in exchange for a personalized experience, but only provided that the platform transparently handles their personal data.
Building trust in the commerce media ecosystem rests on three pillars: data transparency, content relevance, and privacy protection. For advertisers, this means moving away from aggressive targeting methods towards creating value for the end customer. If a retailer uses data to genuinely help a customer choose or offer a useful discount on a product they regularly buy, trust in both the brand and the medium itself grows.
“Trust, not attention, is becoming the most valuable engine of growth in commercial media. In an environment where attention is fragmented, those who can establish an authentic relationship with the consumer based on reliability win,” the analysis states.
Another challenge for the industry is measuring effectiveness. Traditional metrics such as ROAS (return on ad spend) are being supplemented by indicators of customer lifetime value (LTV). Companies that focus solely on immediate sales through aggressive advertising risk eroding trust, which in the long run leads to a decline in loyalty. Sustainable growth requires a balance between performance marketing and brand building in a safe and trustworthy environment.
In the near future, it is expected that the winners in the field of commerce media will be those entities that can better integrate advertising messages into the customer's natural journey through the purchasing process. Trust thus de facto becomes the new currency that determines whether a user will share their preferences with the platform and whether they will repeatedly return for purchases.
