The Czech Telecommunication Office (ČTÚ) has announced the release of the key 26 GHz frequency band, which will enable internet providers to offer wireless connections with speeds comparable to optical networks. So-called millimeter waves will be available for commercial and private use from July 1 this year. This is the historically most extensive allocation of radio spectrum that the office is opening in this regime.
Frequencies in the 26 GHz band are intended for a wide range of technological applications. In addition to building public 5G mobile networks, they will primarily be used in fixed wireless access networks (FWA). These represent an alternative to classic cable or optical connections, especially in locations where excavation for fiber optics is economically unprofitable or technically unfeasible. However, the band is also suitable for building private local networks in industrial areas.
“In addition to public and private 5G mobile networks, there is also room for FWA networks, which can supplement or replace cable internet connections. The band can thus help expand high-speed internet even to places where it is not easy to bring optical connections,” the Czech Telecommunication Office stated regarding the decision.
The new CTU conditions are set to reflect European harmonization and simultaneously allow access to frequencies for smaller regional operators. The use of the spectrum will take place based on individual authorizations. The regulator confirmed that both large and small market players have already shown interest in this band, with some specific projects already in the preparation phase. Recent tests in the Czech environment, for example at VanCo.cz, have confirmed that gigabit speeds can be stably achieved over several kilometers in this band.
In addition to releasing the band itself, the office also issued accompanying general measures that specify the scope of data on issued authorizations. This step is intended to ensure effective and transparent management of radio spectrum. It is expected that the deployment of millimeter waves in practice will significantly contribute to fulfilling the goals of the digital agenda in terms of the availability of gigabit connections for Czech households and businesses.
