The Government of the Balearic Islands has officially launched the operation of the first autonomous digital radio broadcasting network using the DAB+ standard in Spain. The project, at the heart of which is the Alfàbia broadcasting center in the municipality of Bunyola, includes the digital broadcasting of the public station IB3 and confirms the archipelago's position as a technological leader in the transformation of the audiovisual sector in the country. The inaugural ceremony was attended by representatives of the regional government, the Spanish public broadcaster RTVE, and the technology company Cellnex Telecom.

The introduction of DAB+ technology represents a fundamental qualitative shift for listeners. Unlike analog broadcasting, the digital standard offers clear sound without interference, easier tuning, and the ability to transmit additional data, such as textual information about content or image metadata. The advantage of the system is its universal availability without the need for an internet connection or subscription fees, ensuring the free nature of public services is maintained.

“Today, we are not only launching new technology, but consolidating a more modern and accessible public service model ready for the future. The Balearic Islands are the first autonomous community to opt for DAB+ digital radio,” said Xisco Cánovas, Director General for Digital Strategy and Technological Development.

The infrastructure is designed as a stable and scalable system with a plan for gradual expansion throughout the archipelago. The project anticipates the activation of a total of 12 broadcasting centers on the islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. Work began at the end of 2025, and full completion is expected within 18 months. During the first quarter of 2026, both test and live broadcasting has already commenced in Ibiza and Menorca.

The significance of this step extends beyond a simple technical improvement. It responds to the growing number of DAB+-enabled devices among residents and tourists and prepares the region for the future expansion of programming offerings. The model is set up to allow other operators to enter the network in the future, thereby creating a competitive and more diverse media environment in the Balearic Islands.

The government's chosen strategy aims at the digitalization of administration and services for citizens, with radio broadcasting being a key element of the information infrastructure. The utilization of the Alfàbia broadcasting center as a strategic point enables efficient coverage of vast areas and forms the basis for a modern communication ecosystem of the 21st century.
